BASSEX

Live DJ gig tomorrow at BRETZ for BASSEX. Underground electronic music event. Doors open at 9:00pm. Come see me and dance.

Things are CRAZY (good)

So yeah… I was asked to perform (last minute) with DJ KENNETH THOMAS (Perfecto) on the song that we did called PIECE OF ME.  At the CITY LIGHTS MUSIC FESTIVAL this past weekend.  That really gave me the BOOST to my performing live itch.  As well I’ve never performed infront of 10,000+ people before. And It has forever changed my life and has given me new / renewed motivation and inspiration to really pursue my live show.  It was incredible.

Not to mention I was also introduced on stage by American Idol BLAKE LEWIS (I previously did a remix for his song BINARY LOVE but we had not met before) and we hung out most of the night/evening chatting and becoming friends.

So yeah… it was an EPIC EPIC EPIC night… :D

Day… 10?!?! Already?!

Well I’m officially behind with my schedule.  However there have been some personal life issues I’ve been working through this last week. But I am getting back on the case and also figured I need to learn Ableton Live as that will be my best software option for performing live.  So I have a few songs ready to bring into the software and start learning.  Hopefully its intuitive enough that I can pick up relatively quick like.  :)

Day 3 and 4

Not much progress these 2 days… waiting on more stems from Caesar.  : )

DAY 2

Well I made some progress today.  Worked on some Ideas for the actual stage set up and have a really cool Idea for part of the visual experience. So long as we can pull it off and make it look awesome.

I have the set-list / songs that I want to perform picked out.
(will need to switch out a few songs here and there based on the show and time allotment)

The Silence
Grounded
95
Time
Attention
The Anatomy of a Human Bomb
Bad Days
Give me tonight
Oxygen & Atmosphere
Be Careful (My Love)
*Live Song Creation

So on any given night/performance the songs will vary based on what I’m feeling like and energy of the crowd.  And will fit to a 60-90 minute set.  But the portion I think that I am looking forward to the most is the Live song creation.  Where I plan to spend just 24 minutes and create a song (sometimes with vocals sometimes without).  I will have some “skeleton” production elements pre-rendered to go (drums/percussion elements/swishes and other FX) as those can be tedious and not very exciting creation wise. But the melodies and everything else will be done live on stage in real time. As well as tempo/key etc… And then the coolest part is making the show IMMEDIATELY available for download after that nights performance on the website.

I will be playing keyboard/piano on the other songs and singing. Bringing in different elements as I progress through the songs.  Much like what IMOGEN HEAP does for her live shows. (Huge inspiration).

All of the songs I plan to have a visual thing going on using VJ software which will control images/videos etc on a series of monitors.

I am working on getting all of the stems for the project files still.  Caesar is sending me the first batch or 2 this week :)

Day 1 - Today wasnt as productive as I hoped it would be. However I did get my laptop completely wiped clean of Ubuntu and put back the lovely windows XP and installed most of my audio software and VST Synths/Instruments.  I also started to collect the STEMS for all of the songs on the set list. I have 2 songs done (in terms of stem collection) now.  I will be getting more stems through out the week.  I started to practice some Ideas for one of the songs I will be doing live. And I am going to start it off acoustic with just a piano and myself… and then introduce elements as the song progresses which I think will be nice and intimate.  I got my audio hardware hooked up to my laptop (Using a Focusrite Saffire via Firewire) as my main audio interface.  I am really nervous that the video VJ program might be a little to resource heavy to handle live audio and video on one machine. Which will definitely throw a significant wrench into the plan.  I will know more on that once I dive into testing those 2 applications running at the same time and linked via REWIRE.  I had to use a different audio program than what I am used to using.  I was planning to use CUBASE 5 STUDIO (which is what I use in the studio) however, me being an idiot forgot that it was only licensed for 1 machine so before I went through the process of installing cubase and doing updates, i decided to try out Presonus Studio One, which I had a free copy of.  It works with VST instruments as well as Rewire so in theory everything SHOULD talk to each other.  I guess we will find out later this week/next if that is the case. At anyrate. Day 1 is over. And getting ready for DAY 2 which is more stem collection.  (The majority of the stems however will be coming from my band mate Caesar, and unfortunately that will take some time to get those stem files.  But I will still utilize week 1 as a productive week and may turn it into a Video File collection (week 2) week.)Good Night! :)

VIDEO BLOG 1

testing tweet.

linking this to my twitter @3pmusic seeing if this works correctly. :)

early.

It’s been on my mind most of the day so I had to start today (or I would never be able to sleep. Good ol OCD). So I began constructing my set list/ideas for the live performance.

A few things to note about what the live show is envisioned to be:

  1. Performance Art = Visual + Audio + Social experience.
  2. Creating a song (sometimes with vocals, sometimes instrumental) live on stage in 24 minutes.
  3. Integrating Social Networking into the live experience. (not exactly sure what/how to do this but I am researching.)
  4. Making every night’s performance available after the show for immediate download (free download via the 3pmusic.com store)

A few things I do NOT want the experience to be:

  • Me on stage singing to backing tracks
  • Not engaging
  • Boring

Right now I have made up a schedule, approx 7 weeks.

Week 1: Asset collection/creation for audio.

  • Getting stems from all the songs (instrumentation parts like bass, synth, keys etc)
  • Creating new/updated instrumentation for the songs (perhaps new drums or additional keyboard parts)

Week 2: Arrangements of songs.

  • Arranging stems into songs (and implementing new parts from week 1)
  • Creating skeleton tracks (pre loading instruments into the project file for quick access/drum grooves etc)

Week 3: Visual Asset Creation

  • Shooting video
  • Creating CG animations/graphics/Loops
  • Editing/Post Production

Week 4: Video / Audio arranging

  • Setting up software (Cubase + Arkaos)
  • Programming visuals/midi programming/video triggers
  • Mapping to multi monitor displays

Week 5: Stage Construction (simple design but will need some custom building done to house the monitors/cable management)

Week 6 (on going): Putting it all together… Rehersals.
Taking all the previous weeks efforts and combining them/practicing to ensure all goes well and there are no hiccups (of course the “unknown” can happen but being comfortable/confident with the software/performance is key)

Once everything is practiced and several dry runs performed I will take it out to a live venue where I will have my first (of hopefully many) live shows.

As of right now the set list will be pretty much the same. However the “Song Creation” will change every night as new improvisation/inspiration will happen live and yield a different result.

Sorry for the long post.  But like I said.. Im documenting this experience. :)
